In our experience, good standards are derived from working technology that
has been field-proven. As an immediate case in point, the cross-compiler
standard that I'm working on proposals for is based on architecture that
has been used by MPE and FORTH, Inc. and our customers (in quite different
implementations) for several years.
Therefore, I believe our most constructive contribution toward an OOF
standard would be a working implementation used by a number of our
customers, with their feedback incorporated into its design.
Before embarking on this project we did a fairly detailed study of the
existing implementations, as well as sources such as the FORML working
group report and Wil's paper (which ended up being the closest model). We
are attempting to learn all we can from all these sources.
Cheers,
Elizabeth
