I use:

though not fool proof.
I have though of using the top line of the screen
for status information which would include BASE ...
I have come to think other languages better
than FORTH for accepting numbers which
indicate their base, like $03D0 or FDEDH
there is probably some compelling reason for
forth not to do so...
