You may also want to try VIM (vi improved), for the same reasons that Rick
mentioned: it has versions for both Windows and Linux and it is reasonably
easy to use (if you already know vi). I have been using it for several
months now, but keep sliding back to PFE, an "ok" free file editor that the
standard Swift Forth install seems to know about.
However, I suspect that EMACS would be a better transportable editor,
notwithstanding the learning curve.
All of the "which editor is best" stuff was thrashed out previously on
SFTalk, so you might want to check the archives. As I recall, everyone that
used ED really liked it.

Leon mentioned EMACS -- which is all I have used for about 5 years now.
I love the configurability and programmability, but I woudn't claim to
be an elisp programmer of much regard.
One of it's most winning features is its portability. I run it on Windows,
Linus, and BSD -- and all my finger memory moves from platform to platform
with narry a hiccup.
