Passwords

This is a general question for design planning. My software is educational courseware and each
participant will have a password. So, I am wondering if registration with a password can be set
in say my ABOUT-GOMAIN box? I mean, after the program is loaded, can the ABOUT-GOMAIN
pop-up as a reminder to register with a password. Then, if one wants to set another password
to protect their data - work - could the program cross check the original password for checking
the registration? I would like the password to protect other passwords such as an internet web
account login at a later time. That is that the end-user can use this application as a portal to the
other course materials and such. What are usefule design schemes that others are using for
such things?
