Integer vs Floating multiply/accumulate tradeoffs re FFT

Recently in some forum ( sftalk &/or comp.lang.forth ) there was a
dicussion of actual vs presumed speed of floating/integer multiplies.

I cann't find it. Does this ring any bells ;?

The problem I'm interested in inherently has a >500:1 frequency range.
Other considerations sugest multiple 4000 point FFT's.
FORTUNATELY, real-time is NOT an issue.
