commdriver emit

When i try to use commdriver.f

  ." test" com1 xmt write-string

works, but

  char a com1 xmt emit

apparently can't find "maxtime".
If i define maxtime with a colon rather than defer: it aborts later in
the definition.

Any thoughts?
