hi, i dont know how active this list is but i will try this anyway. i'm a
programming artist interested in extending SwiftForth with my own set of
tools for interactive simulations development (in other words... games)
i have this crazy idea of harnessing DirectX. is this suicide? technically,
all i need is to make use of the DX DLL(s?) properly and it should work for
me, right? i figure (as little as i know now) that all i need to do is
"convert" parts of the header file prototypes to something FORTH-ish. i
downloaded the DX9 sdk just to see what it was like and was pretty much
blown over by the sheer volume of header files.... also there seems to be
something going on in the Lib folder that makes me think there is more to
DX9 than just the DLL's, or are those libraries containing more specialized
(non-necessary) functions that i could recreate myself?
i should probably make it clear at this point that i have no love for C and
C++ and won't consider stooping to that level just so i can make games - i
can do that any time i want, but it will get me nowhere. my goal is to teach
the computer things that i can make it do at my command. eventually i want
to extend the system to the point where i will be doing less and less actual
code for each consecutive project (as projects share more and more abilities
from previous ones) - my theory is as the process goes on, the actual
game-making will become more and more spontaneous/experimental and less and
less "planned" or "technical" - a kind of semi-visual suite of tools.
FORTH is the only language that makes me feel like i am actually in control.
:]
i'd appreciate any ideas or responses.
