Accessing a USB 1.0 audio device

A Google search turned up lots of stuff, but not how-to.
Specifically I have an AK5370 USB microphone. (supported by WinXP)
I wish to "open it", accept continuous data, until I "close it".

I assume I may have considerable reading to do.
Any pointers?
