Evidently no longer the case. http://www.boutell.com/gd/faq.html states:
' bgd.dll includes png, jpeg, and freetype support as "standard
equipment." '

I'm also intrigued by it saying "The PHP 4.3.x version of gd offers
features similar to and sometimes in addition to those included in the
latest version of gd found here."

Seems like I have * MANY * options :)
