do 100,000 iterations of a test to compute the MD5 hash of
a phrase computed 10,000 times.
On the same Toshiba Satelite laptop, P4. 2.85 GHz, 1Ghz,
SF 3.0.12 Eval

Windows XP: ~25 seconds
PCLinuxOS 2007 under wine 0.9.47: ~33 seconds

MPE is coming out with a native Linux version, hopefully in 2008,
are any such plans in the works for SwiftForth?

Jabari

I'm using PCLinuxOS 2007 on a Toshiba Satelite laptop, P4,
using wine 0.9.47 and Swiftforth 3.0.12 Eval.

Once Swiftforth loads and is running, on the toolbar click on
  Options -> Preferences

A popup window appears with 2 groups of 4 squares which
  all have black backgrounds.

Look at the top left 2 squares (text/background) next to "Normal"
I clicked on the right square (for background) and got it to
become "white" which put the screen background to "white"
which enable printed text to be seen. I couldn't get colors to work,
but I didn't play with it too much yet either.

Hopes this works for you. :-)

I haven't used Wine under Linux, but my experiences with Mac OSX may
  be
  helpful.

Run X11. (In Mac OSX you need this to run Wine.)
  Under the X11 menu
  Enter: Preferences.
  Choose: Output.
  Select: 256 Colors.

  SF works with this setting.

You may have heard of CrossOver by CodeWarriors (available for Intel
Macs and Linux). Version 6.0.1 allowed SF to run with yellow
background, but subsequent versions produce the black background you
encountered. There doesn't seem to be any way to get to Wine
Preferences but here is a kludge for the desperate:
  run SF
  from Tools select History
from File select Session Log, choose a name (e.g. sf.log)
  open sf.log

In Mac OSX sf.log is updated dynamically so you can see output.

I have installed a version of Linux (Ubuntu) on a machine, and then
installed Wine, which allows the installation of Windows based
  applications
so that they run on the machine in a Windows equivalent environment.

I have installed Swiftforth (2.2.2.9) on that machine, and it works,
  with
one problem - the session window is black, as is the text, and the
  color
palette is filled with black squares. I can see operations working (2
  3
  *
and I see 6 on the bottom of the session window) but cannot see any
  typing.

Has anyone tried this and attacked this problem? Is there a specific
  Windows
DLL that the color picker uses and that Forth uses for its session
  window? I
can always put DLLs wherever they need to be, since Wine creates the
  Windows
  equivalent folders...

  Thanks!
