Leon,

You might consider using the services at tinyurl.com -- you can feed it
a url of any length, and it will reduce it to a permanent very short link.

For instance, http://www.forth.com (which admittedly isn't very long)
shortens to http://tinyurl.com/25nzr8 . Urls of any length will shorten
to a string of this size.
