Charley got me started with VIM.

I use both the GUI and command line on Mac, Linux and PC. That is a
big advantage. It is also very fast on even the slowest old PC.

Another free editor I like for the PC is PSPad. It does not have the
learning curve that comes with VIM. PSPad also has a forth syntax file.
