Mike's manifest file works great!
When it is present, the newer-style edit control results.

It seems that there is no need to use the InitCommonControlsEx function or
the associated InitCommonControlsEx structure.

Microsoft documentation states:
> ICC_STANDARD_CLASSES: Load one of the intrinsic User32 control classes.
> The user controls include button, edit, static, listbox, combobox, and
> scrollbar.

This gives the impression that by using ICC_STANDARD_CLASSES with the
InitCommonControlsEx function it is possible to select the old-style/ non-XP
version controls.
However, this is not the case. The selection process is based solely on the
presence or absence of the manifest file.
