What is good Small network to use with SwiftX

How to reply: Use your email client's "Reply All" function to reply to the
entire list (preferred). Use "Reply" for a private reply to the sender.

I wish to network a number of AVR boards ( programmed with SwiftX ) & a PC runnung a program written in SwiftForth & Delphi, our boards have 485 hardware. Does anyone have any advise on protocol or a network ( to purchase,beg ,borrow ) that may be of use , or be written in forth that may save me learning/programing form scratch . Also I am new to using embedded systems.

This will also test that I am on the swiftX mailing list as i Joined Oct 11 & since recieving the Listar acknowledgement nothing.
